Teaching Approach:
My studio offers lessons to children age 3 to 19. I am very mindful of a child’s physiological, psychological and musical development in my teaching choices. I use the Music Moves for Piano series by Marilyn Lowe and Edwin E. Gordon as a basis for teaching students to play by ear, improvise by ear and read by ear. My supplemental material includes classical repertoire, pop/rock/folk songs, and lively and accessible “teaching” pieces. Attention to the comprehension of meter and harmonic function informs solfège exercises, improvisation, sight reading and interpretation. Students are also encouraged to pursue their individual interests. The majority of lesson time is individual, but almost all students have some sort of group learning experiences through special events or overlapping lessons. I offer several performance opportunities annually.
