Teaching Approach:
My goal is to impart the joy and satisfaction of making music at the piano. I work with older children, teens, and adults, and am sensitive to individual learning styles, interests, and abilities.
Two things are basic: 1) playing pieces you enjoy, and 2) learning to play them in a way that feels and sounds great (technique). Good technique is important at every level, linking physical movement to expression. I have special training in teaching movement and coordination which is indispensible and effective for guiding players to their fullest potential.
Understanding music structure: phrase, harmony, melody, rhythm, etc. is part of the package and is essential to the experience of playing musically.
Students are encouraged to perform, and I provide opportunities several times a year. Teens and children do best when parents actively value classical music by listening to it at home and at concerts.
Background:
Degrees include: B.M. in Piano Performance, Univ. of Colorado, M.M. in Piano Performance and Movement, Univ. of Redlands. Doctoral studies in Music Theory, Univ. of Michigan. I am a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, which is a method for increasing ease in physical performance. I have training in the Suzuki Method, the Taubmann Technique, and Piano Kinematics.
